Townsville Area Woodturners Association Inc (Assn. 4809)

2003

TAWA’s website started its life hosted on a members “free” home page space on TPG’s servers with a URL that was impractical to communicate to most and as a result was largely unseen except by members in the know and remained that way untill late 2006. Unfortunately in the beginning the management committee could not see the host of benefits available  to the association from maintaining a presence on the internet and a website, but was eventualy persuaded into permitting the creation of this site.

2007

August 2006 saw the site progress with the registration of the domain name www.townsville.woodturners.org and the its hosting with www.Hostess.com. It has remained there and has served TAWA very well, easily being found on Google and by other search engines, often at #1 rank (searches of Townsville & Woodturning).

2009

“The time has come”.....to move on...... the original creator of this website  is no longer a member of the Townsville Area Woodturners Association and is about to hand over the resources associated with this website to a current member of TAWA - Mr. Garth Schmidt.

Open letter from its creator

TAWA’s website has not been updated, (except to remove & correct some contact details) since July 2008 due to problems within the TAWA management committee. I appologise for that but unfortunately that is the outcome and is now out of my hands.

The site has been created and solely funded from its inception until May 2009 by myself as a donation to the members of the Townsville Area Woodturners and to the woodturning community of North Queensland. It has proven to be a very useful resource to visitors and members alike and has fulfilled its purpose by enabling communication with many woodturners across Australia and the world. Hopefully they have found the resources and links on the site helpful and have enjoyed viewing the galleries of members work and the competition entries etc. It is a simple site but has acheived its purpose.

I wish to thank the library staff at both the Townsville and Thuringowa Libraries for their assistance in hosting galleries of members work and  members of TAWA, past and present, who have so generously given of their time to further the art and craft of woodturning in the region. Some have offered support to me in my endeavors to do the same, they are few in number but their assistance has been greatly appreciated and their friendship valued.

I am about to hand over the resources associated with this website to a current member of TAWA - Mr. Garth Schmidt and have offered my assistance to him in settling in to maintain and run the site. I wish him well in his endeavors and sincerely hope he is successful in doing so.

Yours in woodturning
Geoff Whaling.

IIntroduction by new webmaster

I  have now taken over the TAWA website from Geoff Whaling and I would like to thank Geoff for his patience and assistance in showing me how to  modify and update this site. Geoff has done a wonderful job in creating this site and maintaining it over the years, devoting a huge amount of his time and money as a gift to TAWA.

There is a lot to learn about maintaining this site and I am sure that I am only just scratching the surface. I would ask that you have some patience, while I come to terms with the task. As the site has not been properly maintained since early last year, there is a considerable amount of material to be deleted and new items that will need to be added. This will not happen overnight.

As this is your site, I would ask that you contribute to it by forwarding items of interest and photos that will be of interest to woodturners, not only in our club, but any other woodturners that access the site. Articles can be forwarded to webmaster@townsvillewoodturners.org.au. I would ask that any pictures that you forward, be kepy to under 40kb.

I would also encourage any members of the public that may have an interest in woodturning or scrollsawing to drop me a line so that arrangements can be made to get you information about future courses.

Once again, I sincerely thank Geoff Whaling and hope that I can do justice to the fantastic legacy that he has left TAWA.

Garth Schmidt.
